State baseball: Road warrior @ccaeagles run-rule their way to first state title

As a district runner-up, the Calvary Christian baseball team had to play the role of road warriors throughout the postseason, traveling down to Miami for a pair of regional victories before reaching the championship game with a near no-hitter in a semifinal across Alligator Alley.

So it was no surprise when, in their first state title game, the tested Eagles were able to jump on Fort Myers Bishop Verot — a home team both on the scoreboard and geographically.

Calvary bashed out five runs in the first inning and never looked back, finishing off Bishop Verot in a 12-1 five-inning run-rule victory in the Class 4A state title game at JetBlue Park on Saturday for the Eagles’ first state championship.

“We all worked hard to go win something. We all had a goal from the beginning of the year — let’s go win a ring,” said senior catcher Max Guzman. “We all connected. It was like a family. We all got together; we all stayed together.”
